Each year Valentine’s day provides an opportunity for people to profess their love for someone special in their lives. From couples who have been together for many years to young people who are giving the first hint to someone about their feelings, people use the day to focus on that special someone who means the world to them. Nowadays, companies who print greeting cards have cornered the market in sending that special message, but has that always been the case, and how did it all start? The original St Valentine is a somewhat legendary figure, with no definitive account of his life existing. Several early Christian martyrs are called Valentine, but the character most associated with the modern celebration is “Valentine of Rome”. The legend is that he was a priest who lived around 270 AD, and he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians being persecuted by the Romans at that time. While he was in prison he reputedly healed the daughter of his jailer, and before being executed he wrote a message “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her. He was later canonised as a saint for his martyrdom, and St Valentine’s Day was included in the church calendar. Because of the legend of the way he brought couples together despite their love being forbidden, and his message to the jailer’s daughter, Valentine was seen as a patron of couples and romantic relationships. Our first indication of this is in the writings of Geoffrey Chaucer in the middle ages. In 1382 he wrote a poem in honour of the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, which included the lines.
